What To Expect As a Student at American Beauty Academy

Our focus is on our students. As a student at American Beauty Academy, you can learn from passionate instructors who want to help prepare you for your future career. With small class sizes, you get more personalized attention from our instructors as you perfect your craft and learn hairstyles, hair coloring, manicures, and so much more.

When you first start our cosmetology program, you can expect to complete your first eight weeks of training in the freshman program, learning the basics of hair, skin, and nail treatment processes. You can expect to practice your developing styling skills on mannequins.

After completing the initial eight weeks of foundational training, students can receive additional help if required or they can move on to the junior program. Once students move to the junior portion, they have the flexibility to arrange their school schedule however it fits best into their lives! Plus, students can often learn from scheduled guest artists for the latest trends and methods.

Students in this phase of their education have plenty of opportunities to work with real clients each week during training in our student salon. The salon provides hairstyling, skincare, and nail services to the public at affordable pricing, enabling our students to receive plenty of experience working in a real salon.

All services are provided by students under the supervision of licensed professionals.

Additional Questions and Program Details

How Long Does It Take To Become a Cosmetologist?

If you want to know how long cosmetology school is, the answer is that it depends on the program and schedule! At American Beauty Academy, you can complete our full-time class schedule in as little as 49 weeks, while our part-time program can be completed in as little as 86 weeks.

There are three steps you have to take to become a cosmetologist:

  • Graduate from cosmetology/barbering school with a minimum of 1,600 hours of training completed.
  • Sit for the state board exam, including the written exam as well as the test of learned skills administered by the State of Utah.
  • Submit an application for cosmetology licensing through the state of Utah and pay the required licensing fee.
How Much Does Cosmetology School Cost?

Tuition varies based on the program and the campus. All programs require a $50 non-refundable application fee.

  • Tuition at Salt Lake campus — $15,000. You can also expect an additional $2,500 for the cosmetology kit.
  • Tuition at Payson campus — $15,000. You can also expect an additional $1,700 for the cosmetology kit

You can view the full breakdown of costs in our course catalog. But, don’t let the cost of beauty school stop you from enrolling! See financial aid information and other payment plans available to students of American Beauty Academy.

Can Financial Aid Cover Cosmetology School?

Yes, financial aid is available to those who qualify. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) to find out which financial aid you may qualify for.

Different types of financial aid for cosmetology school includes:

Pell Grant — All cosmetology school students should consider applying for the federal Pell Grant. This grant is available based on financial need, regardless of grades. In order to be eligible for a Pell Grant, you are required to enroll in a full-time or part-time course of study that can result in earning a degree or a professional certificate, like cosmetology school.
Federal or Private Loans — After completing the FAFSA®, you may find you qualify for certain subsidized or unsubsidized loans. These may have better interest rates or repayment plans than a traditional private loan. However, private loans may also be a viable option to pay for your education.
Scholarships — In addition to need-based financial aid, numerous scholarship opportunities are available to some students, based on merit. Students and applicants who demonstrate strong potential for success as cosmetologists may qualify for scholarships to help pay the cost of tuition.

For more information on financing, contact your American Beauty Academy advisor at the West Valley campus by calling (385) 377-7366, or at the Payson campus at (801) 592-2445.

Is American Beauty Academy Accredited?

Yes! Our cosmetology school is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS), and we are certified by the US Department of Education.

Are Cosmetology Hours Transferable?

Some hours may be able to transfer to American Beauty Academy! An evaluation conducted by the Academy Director to determine if the transfer student is on an equal footing with our students with similar hours. If so, then all hours, up to a certain maximum, will
be accepted.

Can Cosmetology Be Taken Online?

Under some special circumstances, some parts of a cosmetology program may be offered online. But, generally, a cosmetology education requires a lot of hands-on training. Students must practice hairstyling, skin treatments, nail care, and associated tasks all under the guidance of qualified instructors. So, it is necessary to build the skills through practice in our onsite student salon.

How To Apply to American Beauty Academy

The admission requirements for cosmetology school include the following:

  • Must be at least 16 of age
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Complete your  pre-enrollment interview
  • Submit application form and pay $50 fee
  • Submit copy of driver’s license, birth certificate, or state issued ID

Note: Students may be admitted prior to high school graduation, but only with agreement from the school district to permit the training to begin.

Before starting the application process, we first recommend coming in for a tour! Call us or fill out a form to schedule a time where we can show you the school, have you meet our team, and see if our school has the right culture fit for you!

You can choose to enroll in our cosmetology program at either our West Valley campus or Payson campus. Get in touch with our team to schedule your tour, or consider scheduling an appointment at our student salon for a new style!
