Read more to learn what the requirements are in Utah and what steps to take to receive your barber or cosmetology license.
Licensure Requirements in Utah
In Utah, those who want to begin a career as a licensed barber or cosmetologist must complete their education at an accredited school. This is required by the state of Utah and all requirements vary depending on where you are planning on residing.
The first step is to enroll in a beauty or barber school that offers the required amount of hours that allows you to sit for your state exam. You cannot sit for the exam without participating in a cosmetology program and must pass the cosmetology exam before graduating. You are going to need a cosmetology degree before you can take the state licensing exam. Utah’s test involves theory and practical or hands-on testing.
Utah Barber License
There are a few things you should know before starting barber school, but the most important is what it takes to receive your license. You must obtain your barber license from the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (UDOPL). Here are a few steps on how to become a licensed barber in Utah:
Step 1: Graduate from a 1000-hour Utah barber school.
Step 2: Submit your license application.
Step 3: Pass the practical and theory exam.
Step 4: Begin your Utah barber career.
Step 5: Be sure to renew your barber license every 2 years.
Keep in mind that renewing your license requires a fee and you are going to want to get this done before the expiration date. If you decide to receive your education through an apprenticeship, the DOPL requires that you train under a licensed barber instructor for 1,250 hours.
Utah Cosmetology License
If you are considering becoming a licensed cosmetologist in Utah, then you must complete 1600 hours of training at an accredited beauty school or work 2500 hours as an apprentice under a licensed cosmetologist. Once the required hours are completed, you are expected to pass the licensing exam issued by the Utah Division of professional licensing. If you are needing to renew your license before its expiration date, this can be done on the UDOPL site.
