Basic Age and Educational Information for Enrollment
The only criterion for enrollment that is age-related is a document showing proof of your age. American Beauty Academy requires a high school diploma, GED, or a training agreement with your high school for students who want to start cosmetology courses while still in high school.
Applicants have an interview before enrollment. Two of the required documents for admission are proof of age and current educational status:

- Birth certificate
- State identification card
Proof of Educational Status
Any of these four documents is acceptable to confirm that an applicant has achieved the necessary level of education to qualify for enrollment in cosmetology school:
- High school diploma

- A High school training agreement
Starting Cosmetology School as a Later Career Choice
If you are wondering, “Am I too old to start beauty school?” the answer is “No.” Cosmetology students come in all ages. If you have a desire to become a cosmetologist, and you’re eager to start training for a new career in the beauty field, prepare for a fun and exciting student experience. You’ll find students and professionals of all ages working together and thriving in their beauty school programs and in your professional salon after graduation.
Learning Knows No Age Limits!
Three things to think about and help you as you consider getting started in beauty school:
Your age is right
Whether you just barely meet the minimum age requirement or are excited about a new career later in your life, if you are passionate about becoming a cosmetologist, go for it!
You want a great career
If you love the idea of having a career as a stylist, esthetician, makeup artist, nail technician, or in another area of the cosmetology field, you can make your desire a reality.
Learn. Graduate. New Job
Once you start taking the steps necessary to qualify for a beauty career you really want, the faster you can start enjoying your new professional life in a job you love.
Some Options to Consider when Changing Careers
Changing careers at a later age may feel a little daunting, especially if you really want to become a hairdresser, but have some physical limitations. For example, if you find you can’t really stand on your feet all day long, why not consider pursuing a new career as a makeup artist or a nail technician? Or, you might consider working part-time at first, and see if you like that pace, and then increase if you wish.
Age-Related FAQ About Enrolling in Cosmetology School
Like all other students, you’ll be going to cosmetology school with no experience. You’ll learn a lot about the school during your campus tour. There is also an abundance of information in the American Beauty Academy Course Catalog, to help you become familiar. Here are just a couple of questions students ask prior to enrollment:
What are the typical career interests and the average age of cosmetology students?
The majority of cosmetology students are female and most are from 18 to 30 years of age. But, the field continues expanding, and now includes many males in training for cosmetology and barbering careers.
What are some key priorities of students who enroll in a top cosmetology school?
Most cosmetology students want to get an advanced education in a good school that is easy to start and does not involve a lot of upfront enrollment cost. They also want to graduate in less time than it takes to get a four-year degree, and they want to get a job and start their career in their chosen profession.
